Jennifer Lawrence is getting some rare backlash for casually referring to her audible excitement as a “rape scream” during a recent Cannes Film Festival event.
The Oscar winner was at theVanity Fair party over the weekend (where she met Justin Bieber) when she spotted Gravity director Alfonso Cuarón and shrieked.
According to Vulture’s reporter on the scene, Lawrence then exclaimed, “I broke out my rape scream for you!” before grabbing Cuarón’s shoulders and screaming, “Ahhhhh!!!”
While the star’s off-the-cuff use of the phrase “rape scream” was obviously not intended to trivialize or diminish the seriousness of actual rape, a number of outlets including the Daily Mail, Crushable, Perez Hilton and Bustle have taken Lawrence to task for the moment.
The argument is that Lawrence was too “flippant” with her language, and that her “rape joke” is inexcusable.
